HS: Winter state, region rankings, Jan. 29
Consider it the calm before the storm.
Fourteen of the 18 region No. 1 teams held those positions again this week, and any turnover at the top was slight. Consider, in Florida-South girls, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) and Archbishop McCarthy (Fla.) simply swapped spots at 1 and 2 after Aquinas avenged its only regular season loss with a district final win. The teams are on a path to meet again in the regional playoffs. In California-North boys, three undefeated teams have been cycling through the top spot, and each steps aside when it ties a match. The rotation in that region ends up with Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) boys at No. 1 while last week's No. 1 Folsom (Calif.) slips to No. 3. The Florida-South boys and West girls welcome new No. 1 teams this week with last week's regional No. 1s sliding down a few spots.
This week, however, the stakes get ramped up.
Florida is into the regional playoffs for girls soccer and this should start to provide some challenging competition for teams that have skated through regular season play. Florida boys, one week behind the girls, starts district playoff action this week. Arizona and Hawaii state playoffs commence, and the Texas schools jump into district play where several state, regional and nationally ranked teams will go head-to-head.
