New York is a chaotic mess in girls polls

New York is a chaotic mess in girls polls

Nearly all of the big movement in this week's NSCAA regional poll update came from New York's Region II, which was a roiling tempest of change at the top. Northport is now king of the hill in a region that saw change at four of its top five spots, a rarity in a girls soccer region so often dominated by regional powers.

Here's a look at the rest of this week's regional rankings for girls soccer.

Region I

Glastonbury's move from No. 11 to No. 7 this week is the only real punctuation mark near the top for Region I, which didn't witness any big upsets over the course of the last week. Exeter kept its place as the No. 1 team in the country, and none of the top six in New England moved an inch this week.

1. Exeter (Exeter, N.H.)

15. Suffield (Suffield, Conn.)

Region II

An enormous spasm of power occurred in New York girls soccer last week when Rockville Center's South Side fell from its perch at No. 1 for the first time in weeks. That triggered a horde of movement, including Northport's ascension to No. 1 for the first time this year with its 9-0-0 record. Monroe-Woodbury took advantage of the tumult by hopping from out of the poll all the way to No. 2 with a 11-0-0 mark. The drop of previous No. 3 Arlington and the inclusion of Honeoye Falls Lima at No. 4, which is also that school's poll debut, means that four of the top five this week are in different places than they were a week ago. Welcome to New York girls soccer, where nothing is certain.

Region III

Upsets continue to be rare in New Jersey and Pennsylvania girls soccer, but the top five was finally delivered one last week when Immaculate Heart Academy lost to drop its mark to 7-1-0. That dropped the regional power to No. 10 and triggered a move up, with Neshaminy being its greatest beneficiary thanks to a blameless 12-0-0 record. There are no losses between the top seven in this region and only eight draws to go around. Dominance.

1. Northern Highlands (Allendale, N.J.)

2. Cumberland Valley (Mechanicsburg, Pa.)

3. Neshaminy (Langhorne, Pa.)

Region IV

Don't look now, but here comes McDonogh. The Maryland juggernaut powered its way up to No. 4 this week, up from No. 14 last week to nestle ever closer to rival Good Counsel, which held fast at No. 2 this week. The two Maryland rivals have to be monitoring each other through narrowed eyes as the weeks seemingly conspire to bring the two closer together. Good Counsel sits at 7-0-4 while McDonogh is 6-1-2. Fellow DMV power Bishop O'Connell fell from No. 4 to No. 12 this week.

Zionsville's precipitous drop from No. 4 last week is the biggest shakeup in the top five this week, as Ohio's Walsh Jesuit hopped from No. 6 to replace it with a 9-0-3 mark.

Region VI

A draw dropped Seattle's Gig Harbor from No. 3 to No. 8 this week, which was the only real movement of substance out west. Santa Rosa, Calif. is beginning to look like the girls soccer epicenter of fall soccer in California with two of the city's programs now gracing the region's top three. Defending NSCAA fall girls national champ Maria Carrillo and Montgomery are a combined 21-1-1 so far this year.
