Clemson prepares you for critical moments

Soccer matches aren’t won with flawless juggling technique or even perfect form. But rather, they’re decided in the pressure moments when the thoughts are cluttered and the game is flashing before your eyes.

The Clemson girls’ Senior Elite Camp understands as much, and its mission is to help players reach their peak level of performance when it matters most.

Held for female players aged 14-18 on June 27-30, the Clemson campus provides the perfect setting for aspiring young players who will receive a valuable few days of evaluation and college preparation.

Clemson women’s head coach Hershey Strosberg leads a team of bright soccer minds who create an environment that has match-level demands and intensity.

“We really put them in game-like environments so that they can perform under pressure and make good decisions when they need to,” Strosberg said. “We treat the week like we would a Clemson preseason, and find ways to bring out the best in them. It’s about passion for the game, competing and working to get better. We help players achieve this by creating challenges and letting them solve the problems within the game.”

One thing the Clemson gathering is also about is guided discovery. Matching Strosberg’s own coaching philosophy, the camp provides a strong teaching environment that still leaves room for a player to ascertain the game in her own way.

So when the camp breaks, a player should have a better understanding of how to develop on her own.

“The team building is an important part of the game and is linked to individual performance,” Strosberg said. “By getting them off the field we’re able to break the ice, knock down some of the walls and make the kids comfortable with one another.”

It also affords the coaches at the camp the opportunity to connect with the players as people.

While a great teaching tool, the camp also serves as an informative recruiting trip for both the coaches and players. And in staying in the dorms, eating meals and using campus facilities while socializing with Clemson players, it’s a rare opportunity to experience life as a college athlete.

“Each year we have added several players to our recruiting class directly from girls who came to find more about Clemson and our program,” Strosberg said. “It’s valuable for anyone who wants to be seen by our coaching staff or challenged and prepare for college soccer on any level.”
