93s use teamwork to overcome fatigue
November 25, 2009
CORAL SPRINGS, FLORIDA – The 1993 birth year regional teams took center stage again here Tuesday at the U.S. Youth Soccer ODP Interregional. Some cloud cover made playing midday playing conditions more tolerable than the previous two days, and while fatigue has begun to set in for some of the players, the level of understanding and interplay within squads is improving, so this stage of the event typically features some of the best matches.

Solar SC’s Taylor Smith scored twice in the 2nd half to give the Southeastern team the win. Region I pulled one back late on a fine strike from Dana Rosney, but Smith’s goals, when she ran behind the defense to collect long serves from Kaili Torres (1st) and Abigail Lutzenkirchen, proved to make the difference.

“I felt like we were waking up and connecting more,” Smith said. “We got another midfielder in there and there were more options to run and space to pass and stuff.”

One of the midfielders who helped Region III in the 2nd half was Kaili Torres, who was strong on the ball and always looking to create something. Outside back Whitney Jaynes was very involved in the attack in the 2nd half as well as effective in quashing Region I attacks. Morgan Brian again showed intelligent play in the forward third, while goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin made some good reflex saves in the 1st half when Region I was getting the better of play and pressuring the goal.

For Region I, Whitney Church was solid again in the back line, while fellow Virginian Barbara Platenberg was again solid during a 2nd half stint. Oakwood SC’s Riley Houle serves as a model midfield hub.

Region II 93s 1, Region IV 93s 0

This game featured a lot of 50/50 balls and pressuring tactics that kept much offense from being created, but that didn’t stop KCFC’s Shea Groom from scoring an excellent 1st half goal, where she cut inside her marker and slotted home from inside the area. Groom had a couple of other good chances that she created with her strong runs (which she was still making well into the 2nd half) and good interplay with club teammate Kaysie Clark.

Region II left back Michela Paradiso covered and tracked back well for the match, while U17 Women’s National Team and Novi Jags central defender Olivia Brannon was again solid in the back line. Michigan Gator Megan Marsack was a tough tackler in midfield.

For Region IV, Northern Cal defender Kelsey Foo was good in the air, while right back Marie Mackenzie added tough tackles to her portfolio of good running, tricky moves and manic energy. Her Real So Cal teammate Kathryn Speidel is another with tireless energy who also put in some good serves from distance. Surf SC’s Kate Perry was also active as well as again being good on the ball, and Monique Pendleberry of Camarillo Eagles showed good technique as an outside back.
