Mapping out a new MLS development league

Mapping out a new MLS development league

As MLS considers stepping into the youth space, it’s worth taking a shot at what that could end up looking like.

From the U.S. Soccer scouting perspective, relying on 26 MLS franchises (and growing) to lead the charge could leave players to slip through the cracks; that’s not directed as a slight to the league but just a reflection of the nation’s size. Obviously, the migration of several clubs to the Boys ECNL will hopefully necessitate a growth and expansion of scouting by the Federation of more than just one league.

What seems the most likely outcome at this point is MLS narrowing its scope, and leaning on Under-15 and Under-17 age groups. Once players age out of that, they could either continue on the pro trajectory and get minutes in USL, for reserve teams, or focus on college opportunities at another club.

The Boys Development Academy, for all its ills, certainly at least provided both pathways simultaneously. High level games were available for the future college standouts against players either already signed or well on their way to a professional contract.

But with MLS teams looking to place an emphasis on the pro track, it would make sense to back up what they’ve talked about for years: the desire to compete against pro academies, looking to develop players for their respective first teams. There could be a natural delineation of players emphasizing the pro route and look to work together with local clubs to offer that pathway. Players with a college-first mindset could stick with their clubs and move along via ECNL or U.S. Youth Soccer opportunities.

There are several ways that this could go as a new boys development pathway is set to launch.
