More playoff berths decided in U18 Academy
June 10, 2011

The USSF Development Academy season concludes with two major events. The first is the DA playoffs, held this year in Frisco, Texas June 24-28. Thirty-two teams qualify, the top two teams in each of 10 divisions (based on inter-divisional play) and then 12 wildcard teams (based on overall points per game). Seeding is based entirely on points per game.

So in the U18 age group, here’s a look at how the division and wildcard races are shaking out.

Frontier Division: Real Colorado look good for one of the top two spots with 23 points after 13 matches. This despite a 3-0 loss to local rivals Colorado Rush last weekend. Abdoulie Jatta, Emmanuel Martinez and Cameron McCaslin scored for Rush, who are a point behind St. Louis Scott Gallagher Metro. Metro has a game in hand however in the race for 2nd place.  All three of these teams are currently in range for a wildcard berth.

Great Lakes Division:  Derby County Wolves are at 28 points  but have completed their divisional matches and have just a plus four goal difference.  Chicago Fire and Indiana United each have two matches remaining and could reach the same 28-point mark.  All three teams are in range for a wildcard.

Texas Division: With two matches remaining for each, FC Dallas is at 31 points, Dallas Texans 28 and Lonestar SC 27. Texans beat Lonestar 2-1 on the weekend. FCD and Texans are in range for a wildcard as well, but Lonestar is not.

Liberty Division: PDA (16 points), New York Red Bulls (14) and Albertson SC (14) each have two matches remaining.  Cosmos Academy East has three matches to play against each of the other three (all of whom are in wildcard range), and is at 9 points .

Mid-Atlantic Division: DC United and PA Classics look strong at 23 points with two matches remaining. FC DELCO clings to hope at 19 points and on the cut line for the wild card.

Northeast Division: Empire United completes a club sweep of the division with 20 points, ahead of Seacoast United at 19. Those two teams are finished in the division, but FC Greater Boston Bolts could get the 2nd spot with a pair of wins in Connecticut this weekend.

Atlantic Division: CASL Chelsea are runaway winners of the division with a 12-0-2 record, but Charlotte Soccer Academy and North Carolina Fusion will play for the 2nd spot this weekend. A draw or win gets Charlotte in, while NC Fusion needs to win for a top two spot, but both teams are well within wildcard range.

Southeast Division:  Concorde Fire and Weston SC are the top two here, with none of the other teams in wildcard range. Concorde won its final regular season game Sunday vs. Clearwater Chargers behind goals from Milton Sangabriel, Hugh Pringle and Roberto Hinojosa.

Northwest Division:  Seattle Sounders, Cal Odyssey and Cal Development Academy should all be in pretty good shape for the playoffs,  although Cal Odyssey may want to make sure with a couple of wins this weekend.  J.J. Wozniak’s team won 3-0 vs.  Real So Cal on the weekend, getting goals from Gregory Antognoli, Tren Biswell and Ricky Coppo in support of Matt Dishno’s shutout in goal.

So Cal Division:  Arsenal look good for a top two spot, but Pateadores, Real Salt Lake/AZ and Chivas USA are all in contention for the other and a wildcard berth.
