National Cup X Champions crowned
CHARLESTON, S.C. (August 2, 2011) – A total of 19 U-13 through U-17 boys’ and girls’ teams have been crowned national champions in two competitive divisions at the National Cup X Finals, held July 29-Aug. 1 at Hubbard Fields in Boise, Idaho.
Teams from nine different states claimed national championships and lifted the Doug Hamilton Memorial Cup during the event, which was the culmination of competition which began back in October with the Atlanta Regional and continued through the summer months with a total of 12 Regionals in 11 different cities across the United States.
The largest group of title-winning teams came from Washington, which was the home of five national champion squads. Included in that group was Northwest Nationals ’95 Blue (Wash.), which claimed the U-15 Girls Premier Group to earn the club’s second-ever National Cup title.
Two other clubs earned their second-ever National Cup crowns, including both of the U-13 girls’ division winners. Santa Clara Sporting ’97 Green (Calif.) defeated Eastside FC ’97 Red (Wash.) 2-1 in the U-13 Girls Super Group to win the club’s first National Cup title since 2008, while FC Portland ’97 Navy (Ore.) claimed a 2-1 victory over El Paso Galacticas FC '98 (Texas) in the U-13 Girls Premier Group to earn the club’s first National Cup championship since 2003.
Another pair of clubs moved into a tie for third place all-time with their fourth National Cup titles. Ironbound SC Predators (N.J.) posted a 2-1 win over Westside Metros Premier (Ore.) to win the U-17 Boys Super Group while St. Louis Scott Gallagher - Metro (Ill.) defeated Olimpica United (Calif.) 3-2 in the U-14 Boys Super Group final.
Entering the National Cup X Finals, 99 different clubs had earned a total of 145 National Cup titles. With its 2-1 victory over Windy City Pride (Ill.) in the U-14 Boys Premier Group final, Palo Alto SC ’97 Blue (Calif.) became the 100th different club to ever win a National Cup crown. Palo Alto SC was one of 14 clubs to earn their first National Cup crown, a group which included U-15 Girls Super Group champions West Coast SC Kryptonite '95 (Calif.).
“The girls have come a long way in a short amount of time and today we won a national championship,” said West Coast SC Kryptonite '95 coach Troy Dayak, whose team defeated Sparta United SC '96 Premier (Utah) 2-1. “This is the culmination of many years of training together, working together, coming together, and we’ve been rewarded with a national title. I couldn’t be more proud.”
This marked the first time that the National Cup Finals have taken place in the western portion of the United States and added to Boise’s long history of playing host to National Cup events. From 2004-08, Boise was the site of a National Cup Regional for five straight years.
