In the Northern California/Hawii region, there are very few teams better in the U17 level that the boys’ Santa Clara Sporting squad.

When Head Coach John Azevedo speaks of his boys, he immediately focuses on the simple attribute that has led to Santa Clara Sporting’s success.

“We have a bunch of kids who love to play,” he says. “They are in it to win, and when you have a team whose goal it is to win, it makes it easy to coach.”

Azevedo’s team might implement a well-known playing structure, but as he points out, the team is so knowledgeable to the game that they can adjust their formation to fit any team they play against.

Like any team, there is always a core that works as the glue to unite a team together and keep it successful. In the case for Santa Clara Sporting, Julio Morales has been with the team since the very beginning.

“One of the strengths of this team is that these kids are good friends, we have a number of different nationalities and they all respect each other,” said Azevedo. “If you are a new player they accept each other very well and have a passion for the sport. They conduct themselves well and always strive to do well.”

Azevedo also points out that Gabriel Borges and Carlos Gavino also do very well for the team and have a strong work rate. All of this while Roberto Tenorio anchors the backline.

Santa Clara Sporting will compete for the first time in the Far West Regional League, playing in Arizona and possibly hosting some of that competition. Then they will travel to Dallas and compete in the Dallas Cup for the fourth time.

“The Dallas Cup is such a good tournament, it’s always hard to predict how well you will do,” said Azevedo.

In the U14 Boys table, Honolulu Soccer Club Bulls Kaula leads the way while Santa Clara Sporting also tops the U15 Boys. Mt. Hamilton SC PAC Tigres ranks first in the U16 Boys standings while Marin FC Blue controls the U18 Boys’ list.

In Girls play, Honolulu-based Leahi SC Premiere climbed to the top ranks among the U14 age group, while MVLA Lightning has a wide lead in the U15 table.

Mustang SC takes top honors in both the U16 and U17 Girls rankings while De Anza Force Blue rounds out the top finishers leading the U18 Girls.
