Three games left & NSA has destiny at hand
October 6, 2010
There weren’t many games this weekend in the Midwest Regional League and it was one team that took advantage of having two games this week.
The Naperville Soccer Association Fury U17 Girls squad ended the weekend on top of the table after notching a pair of victories.
Defending Region II champions NSA Fury recorded a 1-0 victory Saturday over St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Green and followed it with a 3-1 win against the similarly-named St. Louis Scott Gallagher. Zoe Swift had the lone goal in the first encounter and added a second on Sunday along with tallies by Jennifer Korn and Elaina Musleh.
With the six points, it leaves NSA Fury with sixteen points, and sole possession of first place with three games remaining.
{mosimage:300}However, team manager Howard Korn believes the team has yet to reach their best play.
“We hit a peak when we made nationals (U.S. Youth Soccer National Championships in late July) and have to keep that intensity up,” Korn said. “We had a lot of time off, but it’s clear that when the team has competition, they set up and play better.”
NSA Fury has total control of its destiny to another championship, but will have to rely on a stingy defense, that so far has allowed only two goals in league play.
“Our team has a very strong defense, in the last three years we’ve average less than half a goal per game,” Korn said. “We are a very quick and athletic team and can run up and down all 90 minutes.”
On its tale is Chicago Fire Juniors Red, whose 2-0 shutout over St. Louis Scott Gallagher-Green helped it leapfrog over Sockers FC Chicago into second place with 14 points. It leaves the Sockers in third with 12 points, creating an extremely tight race hitting the home stretch of the season.
Keeping Up With the Central League
Following up the Golf Coast United Dynamo U16 Boys story earlier this week, it’s two encounters this weekend ended on a sweet and sour note. A 2-1 victory against the Louisiana Fire was followed by a 1-1 draw with Cajun Soccer Club Alliance.
“We had mixed results from the weekend, both games were basically played on their home turf, plus some of our players were missing due to high school commitments,” GCU Dynamo Manager Kirk Quist said. “The tie hurts us because we now don’t control our own destiny in the Preimer League Central.”
GCU Dynamo is now tied for first with Brentwood Soccer Club at 15 points and plays its last game in two weeks, where it will need help from another team to claim the championship.
