U13s take center stage at Dallas Cup
FRISCO, TEXAS – A trio of U13 matches here at the Dallas Cup gave good indications at the level of team and individual talent coming up through the ranks, as the squads battled for quarterfinal qualification at this prestigious tournament.
Ivan Alzate’s Real So Cal team played very well in a 3-1 win over a hard-battling West Pines United side. San Diego Surf eked out a vital 1-0 win over Austin, Texas club Lonestar SC, and a late goal from FC DELCO Black brought about a 2-2 draw in their match with Alaska Rush in a nailbiter of a contest.

U13: Alaska Rush 2, FC DELCO Black 2
I don’t know how good the FC Dallas team is at this age group, but they must be pretty special to have beaten Mike Gorni’s DELCO team by 6-1,because the Philadelphia-area side play a nice brand of soccer.
David Rhoades is an excellent ball-winner in midfield, while Kevin Bendesky has a good pair of feet and distributes the ball well. Ryan Fincher is quick and a tenacious battler, as shown in the team’s effort to equalize in the 2nd half.
With the win at their backs, DELCO pushed forward to tie the game. The Rush net was under siege, but their goalkeeper, Nathan Corona, was on fire, keeping shot after shot out of the goal. In the end, Tiger Graham got the equalizer on an assist from Bendesky.
Rush got a very good effort from Micah Rickard, who exhibits a good combination of athleticism and skill.
U13: San Diego Surf 1, Lonestar SC 0
Luis Barragan scored a late goal to give Michael Nicholson’s team the win. Jack Denny’s corner was headed toward goal by Pablo Pelaez. From a jumble of players Barragan struck it cleanly for the winning tally.
Pelaez had come close in the 1st half for Surf, but Lonestar goalkeepers Brendan Soto and Josh Felger were both good on the day. Blake McAtee also had some good moments in attack for the San Diego side, but he was robbed by Soto after a mazy run. Sebastian Gonzalez is a strong ball-winner. Michael Castaneda is also very good on the ball.
For Lonestar, Dylan Tracy was dangerous at times, and Jose Cervantes was a hard-working forward.
U13: Real So Cal 3, West Pines United 1
Real’s Sam Strong came close to scoring early, but his effort was saved by West Pines goalkeeper Nicolas Zedan. West Pines defender Jean Orvil put in a good shift, both with some tackles and making forward surges with the ball. Steven Ghitis also helped the Florida side’s defensive effort, closing down effectively in his own half.
Jack Marchetto started a nice attacking sequence for West Pines, feeding Ricardo Oliveros who then fed Cameron Kalogerakis, but his shot was deflected wide of goal. Chester Castellaw made a good run down the left for Real, before sending a cross that Kevin Robledo headed off the crossbar.
West Pines went up 1-0 when Oliveros ran onto a through ball from Marchetto and finished well. Real answered almost immediately when Ernesto Reyna found Spencer Held with a good ball on the right, then Held played a wonderful pass into the path of Robledo who drove a shot home to make it 1-1.
In the 2nd half, Strong scored after taking a good through ball from Robledo to make it 2-1. Castellaw crossed a ball for Marcos Bueno to head home, giving Real a 3-1 final score.
