The United States Under-15 BNT survived a challenge from Canada, winning 2-1 on Thursday at the Concacaf Championship. With the victory, the USA clinched a spot in the League A semifinals.

Liam Stribling and Timoni Gbalajobi scored within the game’s first 20 minutes. A strong performance from U.S. goalkeeper Jason Nemo ensured his side would hold on for the crucial three points.

Needing a fast start to keep the pressure on Canada, the United States managed just that with a goal five minutes into the game. Robert Turdean wriggled free down the left side of the attacking third. He curled in a cross towards the back post that Stribling did extremely to head back across the goal, into the far side-netting.

The lead was extended in the 18th minute, capping off a strong start from the U.S. side. Midfielder Niccolo Vafiades ghosted past his defender and crossed to Gbalajobi, who finished well to make it a 2-0 game.

Just when it looked like the USA would hit another gear, Canada closed the game. A penalty in the 33rd minute was slotted home by Alexander Romanov, pulling a goal back for Canada before the break.

In the second half, it was all about protecting the lead. Game two star Ikenna Chidebe entered as a substitute, though was unable to extend the lead. Nemo’s strong performance between the posts ensured that the USA held on for the victory.

With the win and Costa Rica’s loss against Saudi Arabia, the United States finished first in Group B. A semifinal matchup against Panama awaits next.

U.S. Lineup: Jason Nemo; Alex Hernandez, Owen Jorgensen, Luca Antongirolami, Finn McCraney; Nathan Tchoumba, Niccolo Vafiades, Christopher Morales; Liam Stribling, Timoni Gbalajobi, Robert Turdean
