U18 MNT defeats Dortmund's U18s 1-0
The U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team earned its third win in a row during its European training camp with a 1-0 victory against German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund’s U-18 Academy team on Thursday.
The U.S., which previously defeated Feyenoord Rotterdam’s U-19 team and the Netherlands U-18 Men’s National Team, made the most of its one shot on goal, recording the game-winner in the 65th minute.
As the U.S. applied heavy pressure on the Dortmund back line, a bad clearance along the left touchline allowed midfielder Marco Delgado to take possession. The Chivas USA homegrown player delivered a quick cross into the goal box where defender Michael Amick rose up to meet the ball in the air and powered a strong header past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
The defense kept Dortmund off the scoreboard, earning the second shutout in the past three matches for the U.S., and goalkeeper Ethan Horvath finished the game with three saves as the U-18s improved to 3-0-0 on their four-match European tour. The U.S. outshot Dortmund 10-8, but only registered one shot on goal compared with three for the German club – whose senior team has won back-to-back Bundesliga titles.
The final scheduled match for the U-18 MNT is on Sunday, Sept. 16 against Club Brugge in Belgium.
