Weston FC, one of the U.S.’s most prestigious soccer clubs, announces that its U12 Boys’ team will represent the U.S. this October 25th at the Danone Cup in Morocco. This event, held annually in different international countries around the world, has teams from 32 countries competing for the Danone Cup championship.
The WFC team won the U.S. competition at a tournament at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida to represent the U.S. at this event. WFC has represented the U.S. at the Danone Cup most recently in 2012 in Poland finishing in 8th place. It is the world’s biggest football tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12, (U12s category). Every year since 2000, around 2.5 million children take part in local, regional and then national Danone Nations Cup competitions, before the winners fly off to compete in the World Final. In each of the 32 participating countries, Danone’s subsidiaries organize their national tournaments in partnership with the local Sports Federations and/or State Education and Sports Ministries. Over 34,000 schools and 11,000 clubs from all around the world are involved. In 2014, the Danone Nations Cup World Final took place in Brazil.
The U.S. team has been placed in group H along with Italy, Hungary, and host Morocco. They will play three games against these opponents starting October 25th. If they qualify they will then move on to the quarterfinals. Coach Victor Pastora said, "This will be a challenging group to play but we are confident our boys will perform well representing the best soccer at this level." President Steve Ziegler added, "The club is once again pleased that [we] will represent the U.S. and we will look forward to their success in Morocco at the end of October."
Recently the City of Weston and Mayor Dan Stermer, City Commissioners Gomez, Kallman, Fuerer, and Norton, and City Manager John Flint honored the Weston FC 2003 Danone team for winning the 2015 Danone Nations Cup.
