BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Titan women’s soccer team (3-1-0) secured a 3-0 victory over Bowling Green (0-3-0) Sunday afternoon as Detroit won its third straight game playing for the third time in six days.

“We played four games in 10 days and three in the last six days, and we came out with three wins against quality teams. Not only did we beat them, but I felt we were able to dictate the play of those games and that's what is impressive and it showed some real character,” said women's head coach Mike Lupenec.

The first half saw the Titans hold an 8-5 shooting advantage (5-2 shots on goal) in a back-and-forth affair. Detroit broke through at 36:33 as junior Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) took a shot and guided it into the net from just around the 18-yard box for her third of the year. Dzuris now has a goal in three straight games and owns a share of the team lead in points with sophomore Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) who each have three goals and an assist.

Detroit had other first half offensive opportunities in the opening frame but also had a few close calls on the defensive side of the ball. Offensively, Quarrell had a point-blank shot almost 20 minutes into the game that was saved and junior Nina Carter (Clinton Twp. MI/Chippewa Valley) followed that a short time later with a shot off the left post. Quarrell's earlier shot came after she completely broke a defender down and had her moving in the wrong direction just outside the 18-yard box on the right side and moved in for the shot but could not find room on the short side to beat the goalkeeper.

Sophomore Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) finished with three assists on the day, and now has a team-high six assists, setting up both second half goals with great passes.

“When you draw other defenders in, they forget who is left up top and it's real easy to lay balls in there. The defense isn't ready and you catch them off guard,” said McCollum.

Carter and Quarrell were each recipients of a McCollum assist as Carter scored her second of the year in the 63rd minute. McCollum took a throw-in from senior Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) and then moved in from the left side of the goal line drawing defenders to her and found Carter open in the middle who made it 2-0.

Later in the 77th minute, McCollum carried the ball into the box and found Quarrell on the right side who cashed in her third of the 2011 campaign. Dating back to last season, Quarrell has now scored seven goals in her last seven games and eight overall in her last 10 contests.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) made her second straight start making a diving save in the first half and four saves overall recording her first collegiate shutout.

“You can't be complacent where we're at right now because it is still early in the season and we need to make sure we work harder to get better and approach every game like it's our last,” added Lupenec

The 12 goals from Detroit in the opening four games are the most goals the Titans have scored in the opening four games since the first season of women's soccer at UDM in 1993 when the Titans went 2-1-1 scoring 20 goals, including a 12-0 defeat over Swarthmore.

Detroit will stay local and play at Marygrove on Wednesday afternoon with game time at 4:00 p.m.
