COLLEGE PARK, MD - Francis Marion University junior midfielder Yasmin Bunter scored on a free kick in the second half as the Patriots put up a gallant effort but fell 5-1 to ninth-ranked University of Maryland, Wednesday night (Oct. 3) in women's soccer action.

Francis Marion drops to 5-6-1 and will continue its long roadtrip as the Patriots will face Cleveland State University on Saturday at 1 p.m. FMU drops to 0-4-0 all-time against nationally ranked Division I opponents, but Bunter's tally was the first-ever for the Patriots in such a match.

Bunter's score came with 7:59 remaining in the match and was the ending to a sequence that began with a free kick from 35 yards out for FMU. Freshman midfielder Arianna Pierner was credited with the assist.

Maryland outshot the Patriots 23-3 and took all of the match's eight corner kicks. FMU freshman goalkeeper Taylor O'Berry played well against the vaunted Terrapin offense and finished with eight saves.

Bunter also had a shot on goal in the 63rd minute forcing a save by the Maryland keeper. Sophomore forward Elizabeth Asare had the other FMU shot. It came in the 81st minute and was wide of the target.

Ashley Spivey gave Maryland a 1-0 lead with a score in the seventh minute. Junior forward Hayley Brock, a two-time ACC Player of the Week selection this season, followed with a pair of goals to give the Terps a 3-0 lead at halftime.
