The Boston College women's soccer team lost to No. 1 Virginia, 2-1, on Thursday night in an ACC game at the Newton Soccer Field. Virginia scored two second half goals in a four minute span to seal the win.

Boston College is now 4-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the ACC, while No. 1 Virginia remains undefeated at 8-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the conference.

"Tonight we could not have asked much more of our players. They followed the game plan meticulously and played with tremendous determination,'' said Eagles head coach Alison Foley. "Soccer is a game of breaks and tonight we didn't get any ... not to take anything away from Virginia. They are a very good side. It was a great soccer game for the fans to get a chance to see two of the top teams in the country.''

The Eagles scored first when Stephanie McCaffrey broke in alone off a through ball from senior midfielder Patrice Vettori. McCaffrey dribbled into the box and placed a low shot by the Virginia keeper for a 1-0 BC lead in the 47th minute of play. It was McCaffrey's fourth goal of the season.

Virginia tied the game in the 58th minute when MaKenzy Doniak scored off a shot from eight yards out. Doniak was set up on a cross from Annie Steinlage. It was Doniak's sixth goal of the season.

The Cavaliers took the lead for good when Molly Menchel headed in a rebound off a Doniak shot in the 62nd minute. The initial shot from Doniak was saved by BC goalkeeper Jess Mickelson but Menchel pounced all over the loose ball near the goalmouth.

BC had a number of chances to tie the game in the final 10 minutes. In the 80th minute, McCaffrey broke free and into the box. With a defender on her side, McCaffrey released a shot that was easily handled by the Virginia keeper Morgan Stearns (six saves).

In the 88th minute, BC earned a set piece when a hand ball was called outside the Virginia 18-yard box. Eagle's defender Casey Morrison shot sailed high over the near post and the Cavaliers held on for their eighth win of the season.

The Eagles had a number of great chances in the first half. Junior Rachel Davitt had a shot from eight yards out but Stearns was hovering at the near post and snuffed the chance with six minutes to play in the first half.

Two minutes later Stearns robbed McKenzie Meehan. The Eagles sophomore forward broke into the box and attempted to go near post. Stearns dove and stuck her arm out to deflect Meehan's shot just wide.

Both teams had 13 shots in the game. BC had a 7-4 edge in the first half, while UVA had nine shots to six in the second half.
