Chambers-Garcia Nets Two in Season-Opening W

Chambers-Garcia came off the bench to score two goals in a four-minute stretch in the second half.</p> <p>Fordham was the aggressor early, firing four shots and earning three corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of the match. The Wolverines' defense held, and finally got some offense in the 28th minute on a goal from junior&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/toohey_meghan00.html">Meghan Toohey</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian)</em>. Sophomore&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/sosenko_chloe00.html">Chloe Sosenko</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(South Lyon, Mich./Brighton)</em>&nbsp;began the play by sending a long cross into the box. A Fordham defender failed to head the ball, before freshman&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/ordonez_christina00.html">Christina Ordonez</a></strong><em>(Elmhurst, Ill./York)</em>&nbsp;one-touched the ball to Toohey, who snuck in a dribbler to give Michigan a 1-0 lead.</p> <p>The Wolverines added to their first-half total less than three minutes later with a goal from&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/mccombs_tori00.html">Tori McCombs</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry)</em>. Freshman&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/haidar_lulu00.html">Lulu Haidar</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Dearborn Heights, Mich./Crestwood)</em>&nbsp;rocketed a shot off a Fordham defender that deflected right to McCombs, who fired a shot into the back left corner of the net, giving Michigan a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.</p> <p>Michigan added to its lead in the opening minutes of the second half, as senior/junior&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/hein_holly00.html">Holly Hein</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Castaic, Calif./West Ranch)</em>&nbsp;converted her first career penalty kick. Freshman&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/harris_corinne00.html">Corinne Harris</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Chicago, Ill./Walter Payton College Prep)</em>&nbsp;was taken down inside the 18-yard box, allowing Hein to step up and take the PK, which she converted by aiming high and right into the net.</p> <p>Chambers-Garcia scored the first of her two goals in the 70th minute. Junior defender&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/mannino_kayla00.html">Kayla Mannino</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Avondale)</em>&nbsp;chipped a long ball down the left side to Chambers-Garcia, whose shot caromed into the net after glancing off the far post. She then capped the scoring a little more than three minutes later, with Haidar getting credit for the helper. Chambers-Garcia went on a long run on the near side of the field and fired a shot from 15 yards out that bent inside the far post to make the score 5-0.</p> <p>Fifth-year senior&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/kopmeyer_haley00.html">Haley Kopmeyer</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Troy, Mich./Lahser)</em>&nbsp;played 83 minutes in net, making 10 saves. Freshman&nbsp;<strong><a href="http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/clarfield_maddie00.html">Maddie Clarfield</a>&nbsp;</strong><em>(Malibu, Calif./Malibu)&nbsp;</em>came on for the final seven minutes to preserve the shutout.</p> <p>Michigan returns to the U-M Soccer Stadium on Sunday (Aug. 19), when it takes on Pittsburgh.
