Coutu's Two Goals Help ODU Past Radford, 3-0

September 18, 2011

NORFOLK, Va. - Ashlee Coutu scored two goals and Amber Cook scored as well to lead Old Dominion University women’s soccer to a 3-0 win over Radford Sunday afternoon at the ODU Soccer Stadium.

Old Dominion (3-4-1) had a flurry of chances in the first five minutes of the match as Jocelyn Weidner and Lisa Bernardini had solid chances, as a Weidner shot just sailed over the cross bar and a Bernardini shot went off the right post.

Radford’s best chance in the first half came when Sydney Golden attempted a shot from 10 yards out but Brianna Alvarado came out to stuff the angle and stopped the shot to keep the game scoreless.

The Lady Monarchs finally grabbed hold of the lead in the 57th minute.  Rachael Carroll sent in a corner kick from the right that got kicked around, and finally landed at the feet of Cook who hammered in a shot from seven yards out for the 1-0 ODU lead.

After the ODU goal, Radford (5-3) put on some pressure, but the Lady Monarchs came right back as Kate Kelly dribbled down the left side and sent in a cross pass to Coutu who fired a shot past Lisa Lubke for the 2-0 lead.

Just five minutes later, the Lady Monarchs added a finishing touch, as Coutu notched her second goal of the contest.  Lisa Bernardini corralled the ball and sent a touch pass through to Coutu who sent a shot past Lubke for the 3-0 lead and the final tally of the game.

ODU dominated in all statistical categories as well as the scoreboard, outshooting RU 18-8 and held a 9-4 lead in corner kicks.

Alvarado finished ODU’s second shutout of the season with five saves, while Lubke stopped six shots for the Highlanders.

Julie Ruh’e led RU with two shots, while Cook scored her second goals of the year and Coutu now has three on the year.

Old Dominion continues their homestand on Friday when they host George Mason at 7 p.m.
