Cowgirl Soccer Extends Unbeaten Streak with 1-1 Draw at Nevada

Sara Paul records the Cowgirls only goal

Reno, Nev. (Oct. 25, 2013) – The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to five matches with a 1-1 draw at Nevada on Friday night at Mackay Stadium in Reno, Nev. Wyoming (7-8-3, 4-2-2 Mountain West) took an early lead, as junior forward Sara Paul recorded UW’s lone goal in the 20th minute, while Nevada (4-9-4, 2-5-1 Mountain West) tied the match late in the second period as junior midfielder Bobby Reilly recorded Nevada’s only goal in the 83rd minute.

UW’s five-match unbeaten streak is the longest since the Cowgirls won six straight last season. The longest in UW’s history is a nine-match streak in 2011 from Sept. 11 to Oct. 16 when the Cowgirls went 6-0-3.

In the first half, the Cowgirls pressured the Wolf Pack early and often. But it wasn’t until the 20th minute that Paul took UW’s first shot on goal. Senior Lucie McDowell’s pass from the right side found Paul at the top of the box, where she kicked it past Nevada’s freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Quintos and into the left corner of the net. It was Paul’s fourth score of the season and first since Oct. 4 against Boise State.  Just a minute later, junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm made her only save in the first half off of Nevada’s only shot on goal.

The Cowgirls took the 1-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. Paul led Wyoming with two shots in the first 45 minutes, with McDowell and junior Kasey Curtis adding one each.  The Cowgirls limited Nevada to two shots in the first half compared UW’s four.

Much was the same for a majority of the second period, as Wyoming was able to create many opportunities but didn't find the back of the net. In the 63rd minute, Wyoming’s best chance to double its advantage came off a header from McDowell that soared just past the reach of Quintos. Nevada got the better of Wyoming with seven minutes left in regulation, as junior midfielder Bobby Reilly scored her fourth goal of the season to tie the match 1-1.

Heading into overtime, the Cowgirls led in shots, 10-8 and shots on goal, 4-2. The Wyoming defense held their own as the first overtime went back and forth between the two teams. Nevada recorded two shots compared to UW’s one. During the second overtime, the Cowgirls were much on the offensive recording four shots to the Wolf Pack’s one, but neither team was able to score.

Wyoming finished the match with 15 total shots, as Nevada recorded 11. Boehm was credited with one save, as Quintos had seven.  Nevada claimed the advantage in corner kicks, 6-4 with three in the second period. Paul led the Cowgirls with four shots, three on goal, while McDowell recorded three, with two on goal during the match.

Wyoming returns home for a Sunday contest with UNLV on Senior Day. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
