Cowgirls Draw with Aztecs, 0-0

October 23, 2016

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 23, 2016) – Wyoming women’s soccer played to a scoreless draw against the San Diego State Aztecs on Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Soccer Complex. The result earned the Cowgirls a spot in the Mountain West Tournament, as UW is now guaranteed to finish no lower than sixth in the league.

110 minutes of action could not separate Wyoming (9-7-2, 5-4-1 MW) and San Diego State (8-6-3, 6-1-3 MW) on Sunday. Both teams put forth solid defensive efforts, limiting goal-scoring opportunities through regulation and both overtime frames. The Aztecs entered the contest averaging a conference-best 17.89 shots per game in league matches, but were held to only eight shots by the Cowgirls and put just three on net. UW is just the second MW team this season to shutout the Aztecs. Wyoming tallied five shots, putting four on goal.

“The result today gets us into the conference tournament, which is obviously a goal of ours,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “The effort was great today, playing one of the best teams in the league in San Diego State. Both teams had their chances, but I’m proud of the way the team played today. Our defense was strong, everyone battled hard and that’s what it took to get the point.”

Goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree logged three saves on the afternoon in 110 minutes of play, earning her seventh shutout of the year and fourth in league competition. Sophomore defender Taylor Burton also logged a complete game with a career-high 110 minutes.

Wyoming is now sixth in the MW with 16 points. Fresno State and New Mexico sit in seventh and eighth, respectively, with 13 points each. The Cowgirls own the tiebreaker over both, with head-to-head wins over each league foe, assuring a finish no lower than sixth and a spot in the MW Tournament. The postseason competition is set to begin on Nov. 1 in San Diego, Calif., at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Wyoming concludes the 2016 regular season against conference rival Colorado State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
