Cowgirls Edged in Front Range Derby, 1-0

September 18, 2013

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 18, 2013) -- In what was anther close game for both squads, the University of Wyoming women’s soccer team fell to Northern Colorado 1-0 Friday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. For the first time since 2010, the Front Range Derby trophy will head back to Greeley, Colo.

“Sometimes it seems all we really need is that one little push that can help us get over that edge,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said, “These close games are tough but we have to keep fighting and find what will work for us.”

Right from the start it was a defensive battle as both teams looked for chances to take advantage and shots to take. The first and second periods ended up being played pretty evenly throughout the 45 minute periods. Wyoming (3-4-1) once again provided plenty of opportunities with their fast paced attacking style of offense throughout the entire match but the defense of Northern Colorado (3-3-1) seemed to always have an answer against the Cowgirls.

Wyoming attempted ten shots for the match, being led by senior forward Lucie McDowell, junior forward Sara Paul and freshmen forward Brooklyn Chambers, who each recorded two shots apiece. Junior defender Kasey Curtis, sophomore midfielder Mollee Ramsay and freshmen midfielder Mandy Meyer and forward Laurel Ramer each recorded one shot against the Bears.

The game winner and lone goal of the match was scored in the 41st minute by UNC’s freshman forward Shanlie Anderson as fellow freshman forward Katherine Day found Anderson on a cross 15 yards away from the goal who was then able to push the ball past the reach of junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm. It was Anderson’s second goal on the season.

Boehm tallied five saves for the match, as UNC’s senior keeper Natalie D’Adamio recorded six. Wyoming finished the match with three corner kicks compared to UNC’s two.

The Cowgirls and Bears each recorded ten shots, with both teams registering six on goal. UNC held the advantage in the first half 5-4, while UW came out firing in the second half to even the attempts at ten, as the Cowgirls recorded six shots to UNC’s five.

One score has decided six of UW’s eight matches this year, with the Cowgirls coming out on top twice and five of the last six times Wyoming and Northern Colorado have competed for the Front Range Derby trophy.

The Cowgirls will return to the pitch on Sunday against Idaho State at 1 p.m. at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.
