Cowgirls Fall to Idaho State in Double Overt
LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 22. 2013) -- The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team gave Idaho State just about all they could handle Sunday afternoon at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex. The Cowgirls (3-5-1) fell 1-0 in double overtime as the Bengals (3-5) scored the game winner and lone goal of the match in the 102nd minute.
For much of the game the Cowgirls’ aggressive play put Idaho State and its defense on its heels. UW controlled most of the first overtime period while recording three shots but were never able to find the back of the net. The Bengals first and only shot after regulation came in the second overtime, which proved to be the winner. After a foul was called on the Cowgirl defense, senior defender Alyson Stainbrook took ISU’s free kick to push the ball past the reach of junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm into the left corner of the net.
Senior forward Lucie McDowell led the Cowgirls with five total shots, three on goal. Freshman forward Laurel Ramer recorded three shots during the game, one of which was on goal. Senior forward Olivia Mohtadi and junior forward Sara Paul each had two shots for UW during the match, while junior defender Alison Clarke, junior midfielder Loren Mahoney and sophomore Jennifer Paul each provided a shot apiece.
The Cowgirls once again held the shot advantage with 15 total shots compared to the Bengals’ eight. In the first stanza, Wyoming finished with seven shots, as Idaho State was limited to four. In the second 45 minutes, the Bengals were held to three shots, as the Cowgirls recorded five.
The Bengals had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. All four for ISU were in the first period. Boehm came up with four saves in goal to bring her season total to 38, while the Bengals sophomore goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic recorded seven for the match.
Seven of Wyoming’s nine matches this season and last five have been decided by one goal. Today’s match marked the third overtime game for the Cowgirls, bringing their overtime record to 0-2-1.
The Cowgirls return to action for a Friday night matchup in Portland against the Pilots. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. MT. On Sunday Sept. 22, UW begins conference play in Fort Collins, Colo. for the first ever match with Colorado State.
