Cowgirls Shut Down Tigers, 2-0

October 9, 2016

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Oct. 9, 2016) – Wyoming soccer earned its fifth shutout victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, defeating the Colorado College Tigers, 2-0, at the Louis S. Madrid Sports Complex.

Freshman forward Michaela Stark got the action going in the 21st minute after controlling a cross in from senior defender Katie Marcheso. Stark cut around a defender and then fired a shot right under the crossbar to give Wyoming (7-6-1, 3-3-0 MW) the early lead. The Cowgirls were able to carry the 1-0 lead into the intermission after 45 minutes of suffocating defense, not allowing the Tigers to record a single shot.

“I’m really happy with the effort and how we finished our chances today,” UW head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “I think this has been coming for our team. We’ve played well in a lot of games and not gotten results. We just have to maintain our focus and our energy going forward and know that the next game is the most important one.”

Colorado College ( 7-7-0, 3-3-0 MW) managed four shots in the second frame after some halftime adjustments, but recorded only one shot on goal, tied for the fewest allowed by UW this season. The Cowgirls earned four corner kicks in the second half, a consistent strength for the team this year, and once again set plays produced results. In the 65th minute, senior defender Sammi Dunda whipped in a cross that found the head of junior defender Alisha Bass. A solid header from Bass beat CC’s goalkeeper to give UW the vital 2-0 lead.

“Bass is a player who, wherever you put her, is going to make everyone better,” Cuadrado said. “We put her up top and we’re scoring goals. She’s definitely one of our leaders and the move has worked for us. Michaela [Stark] has been creating chances all year and now she’s putting them in the back of the net. I think the work has always been there, so she just has to maintain focus moving forward.”

Dunda started her 14th game of the season and 77th of her career on Sunday. She is now one game away from surpassing Liz O’Reilly (2010-13) for the most starts in Cowgirl history. Junior goalkeeper Georgia Rowntree logged her fifth shutout of the season with one save on the day. Stark tallied a game-high three shots and netted a goal for the second-consecutive game. All three of Bass’s goals this season have been scored from headers, and Sunday’s goal was her second since making the transition from center back to center forward.

Wyoming now kicks off a three-game road trip, beginning with a matchup against San Jose State this Friday, Oct. 14, at 4 p.m. MT.
