September 4, 2013

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Sept. 4, 2013) - The University of Wyoming women’s soccer team will hit the road to take on Drake and Nebraska-Omaha this weekend. The Cowgirls will meet the Bulldogs at 4 p.m. Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, before heading to Omaha, Neb., for a Sunday contest against the Mavericks at 1 p.m.

UW dropped its only match last weekend with a 2-1 overtime loss to South Dakota on Friday afternoon in Laramie. Wyoming fired 14 shots to USD’s eight, but the Coyotes were able to attempt two shots in the overtime period and in the 98th minute South Dakota’s Jamie Karch scored the game winner. Junior forward Sara Paul assisted senior Lucie McDowell on the Cowgirls’ lone goal of the match.

Through the first three games of 2013, the Cowgirls have been paced by McDowell, who leads the team with two goals and Paul, who leads the Cowgirls with two assists. Sophomore Mollee Ramsay is one shot behind Paul’s eight on the season. Junior goalkeeper Alex Boehm has played all three games for Wyoming, allowing five goals while totaling nine saves.

“We’re ready to get going again,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “Drake and Nebraska-Omaha will both be good tests for us. After a few days of practice, I’m looking forward to seeing the intensity of how the ladies come out and play.”

Drake enters the weekend at 0-3-1, coming off last weekend’s 3-2 loss to UC Davis and 1-1 draw with Pacific.

Individually, Drake is led by senior forward Paige Dusek, the only Bulldog to have scored. Dusek currently has all four of Drake’s goals on the season and also leads the team with 10 shots. Senior midfielder Brittany Schuling and freshmen forward Kayla Armstrong follow Dusek in shot attempts with eight and six, respectively.

Defensively, the Bulldogs have allowed nine goals through the first four games. Junior goalkeeper Andrea Swanson has recorded 24 saves while playing every minute defending the goal for the Bulldogs.

Wyoming is 1-1-1 all-time against the Bulldogs, most recently competing to a 1-1 draw at home in 2011. Junior midfielder Sheree Small scored the Cowgirls’ lone goal, which was the first of her career.

Nebraska-Omaha is 1-3 thus far in 2013. In the most recent action, UNO won a 2-0 contest against North Dakota on Sunday before falling to Northern Colorado 4-0 last Friday.

Three players have found the back of the net for the Mavericks. Sophomore forward Katlyn Nimtz, freshmen forward Ava Doetsch and senior forward Melanie McCormick each have recorded a goal for UNO.

Sophomore Meaghan Clark has played all four games as goalkeeper for the Mavericks. She has allowed nine goals through four games for UNO, with 12 saves.

The Cowgirls defeated UNO 4-2, in 2012 in what has been the only matchup between the schools. McDowell, Small, Olivia Mohtadi and Mara Cosgrove each recorded a goal for UW. Paul had three of UW’s four assists.
