CSUB And Saint Mary’s Play To 0-0 Tie

September 18, 2011

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield (2-0-3) and Saint Mary’s (1-2-3) played to a 0-0 double overtime tie Sunday afternoon at CSUB’s Main Soccer Field.

Both teams had chances in the second overtime. In the 101st minute, Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif., Leuzinger HS) hit the crossbar from short range. The Gaels’ Julian Godinez took a shot in the final minute of the match which CSUB goalie Eric Shannon (Jr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) made a save, but the ball went over the endline, giving Saint Mary’s a corner kick. Godinez took the corner which was sent away by Shannon with 11 seconds to go.

The Roadrunners played the final 55 minutes a man down as Kory Kindle (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS) was issued a red card. Saint Mary’s outshot CSUB 14-10, 8-2 in the two overtime sessions. Shannon made seven saves, earning his 16th career shutout.

“I thought it was out worst performance of the year,” said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “We did not play very well at all. I can say that when we had a man sent off and we were a player short, we showed character. We played with one less for 60 minutes and hung in there as well as them. When any team is up a player they are expected to win. The other good thing I can say is that we are still unbeaten. I don’t like that feeling of walking off the field after a loss and we haven’t had that yet this year.”

CSUB travels to Oregon State for the Hensor/Zaher Nike Classic next weekend. The Roadrunners take on Gonzaga on Friday at 2:30 p.m. CSUB plays the host Beavers on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
