ORTLAND, Ore.—CSU Bakersfield and Washington played to a 0-0 men’s soccer tie Sunday afternoon in the final match of the Nike Portland Invitational at the University of Portland.

The Roadrunners (0-1-2) outshot the Huskies (3-0-1) 14-13 and had several chances to take the lead. Gyasi Zardes (R-Jr., Hawthorne, Calif., Leutzinger HS) took a shot on goal in the 25th minute that was saved  by Washington goalie Spencer Richey. The rebound came in front to Kory Kindle (Sr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS) who took a  shot that was saved by Richey.

CSUB had a chance to take lead but Ernesto Hinojosa’s (Sr., Tustin, Calif., Tustin HS) header with 44 seconds to go went wide, sending the match to overtime. The Roadrunners had corner kicks in the final two minutes in three of the four periods that were played.

Eric Shannon (Sr., Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) made three saves on the three Huskies’ shots that were on goal. CSUB is ranked No. 17 in the current TopDrawerSoccer.com Tournament 48 while Washington is No. 25 in the current Soccer America Top 25. This matchup was a preview of the 2013 season as the Roadrunners join Washington in the Pac-12 conference.

"(Today was a) great peformance," said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. "We lost Gyasi (Zardes) and Alex (Flores) and were a little beaten up. We displayed a lot of fight and still managed more shots than our opponent."

CSUB returns to the pitch Sept. 7 when the Roadrunners take on Saint Mary’s, the team that eliminated CSUB from the 2011 NCAA Tournament, in a 4 p.m. matchup.
