NORTHRIDGE, Calif. –

After a 15-7 season in which the Cal State Northridge Matadors matched the program's Division I record for wins, won the Big West Conference and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, head coach Terry Davila was named the NSCAA Division I Far West Regional Coach of the Year on Tuesday night. Davila, in his 14th year with the Matadors, joins former CSUN head coach Marwan Ass'ad as a regional coach of the year and is the only Northridge coach to win the honor at the Division I level.

"To get the same award as my mentor, Coach Ass'ad, is very humbling and gratifying at the same time," said Davila. "I am extremely honored to get this prestigious award and be recognized by my peers."

At the end of the regular season, Davila was also named as the Big West Conference Coach of the Year.

Davila earned his sixth Big West Coach of the Year award and fifth as the head coach of the men's program. He won the award as the women's soccer head coach in 2004. This season, Davila's side ran away with the Big West South Division by claiming the South Division title with a 7-3 record and 21 points.

The Matadors went 13-6 in the regular season and recorded their highest win total since 2005, a season in which Davila also won Coach of the Year. The 15 victories tie for the fifth-most wins in a single season at any level in school history and the seven Big West victories are the most since 2005.

"Anytime you are recognized with something like this, there is a staff that goes along with it," added Davila. "I would not have been recognized had it not been for the amazing student-athletes, our assistant coaches, the trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and everyone else involved with our program."

As the Division I Far West Regional Coach of the Year, Davila becomes one of eight head coaches in the country eligible for the National Coach of the Year Award. He will be honored alongside coaches from the Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, North Atlantic, Northeast, South and South Atlantic regions at the NSCAA 2013 National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. that runs from Jan. 16-20, 2013.

"I am honored to be a part this group and this award is a product of our working together to build our program," concluded Davila.
