Denver Earns 2-0 Win over Omaha

October 15, 2017

Omaha 0-2 Denver (Adler 31’, Dancy 90’)

OMAHA  – The Summit League’s leaders in the golden boot race, University of Denver women’s soccer senior striker Jessie Dancy (Park City, Utah) and sophomore attacking midfielder Hannah Adler (Oak Park, Calif.), both scored and sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Wilson (Littleton, Colo.) made five saves to pace the Pioneers past Omaha 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Caniglia Field.

“Every time this season that we’ve suffered a gut-wrenching loss, like we did on Thursday, this team has found a way to rebound and get a win in the next match,” head coach Jeff Hooker said. “Today was no different. We had a great finish from Adler in the first half to give us the lead, and Brittany had a couple big-time saves to keep us ahead in the second half. Her technique on her last save was brilliant to push that out for a corner and not give up a rebound.

“Finally to secure the victory, Jessie did what every greedy goal scorer should do. She could have run to the corner flag, but she had a great opportunity to score and increase our goal difference in the league, and she got that opportunity off a great assist from Angelica [Pacheco].”

Adler opened the scoring in the 31st minute, finishing from inside the six-yard box to give the Pioneers a first half lead. Junior co-captain Mary DeWalt (West Bend, Wisc.) started the scoring opportunity down the right flank, crossing a ball to the far post to the run of senior forward Angelica Pacheco (Taos, N.M.). Pacheco knocked the ball into the middle of the frame to the feet of Adler, who finished her eighth goal of the season and the 12th of her two-year career.

The 89th minute started a roller coaster sequence of events to end the Pioneers’ seventh win of the season. Omaha’s Susie Dineen got free in the box, and struck a shot that looked destined for the bottom corner, but Wilson dove to hear left and pushed it wide of her post.

On the ensuing corner taken by Carlie Cook, Abby Meader had her attempt at an equalizer saved initially by Wilson and then cleared off the line by senior co-captain Makenzie Bothner (Park City, Utah), before Bailey Cascio hit her rebound to the opposite post and had her try cleared off the line by DeWalt to keep the Pioneers ahead.

Following DeWalt’s clearance, Pacheco hit an outlet ball to the run of Dancy who had nearly half the field to think about her breakaway attempt against goalkeeper Haley Johnson. Dancy dribbled in, and calmly touched the ball around the keeper and played her 10th goal of the season on the ground and into the open net. Dancy’s 10th goal of the campaign is also the 12th of the senior’s career.

Dancy is the fastest to double digit goals in a season since Kristen Hamilton scored 10 times in the first 14 games of the 2013 season.

Wilson recorded the sixth cleansheet of her career, including her fourth of the 2017 campaign. The Denver sophomore also shared four shutouts in her rookie season with Cassidy Rey.
