Dornbos Nets Fifth Career Penalty Kick in 2-0 Victory

BOX SCORE

DETROIT -- It was a swirling winds kind of day in Detroit and junior Rebekah Dornbos scored on her fifth career penalty kick attempt in the 22nd minute. The tally held up as the winner as the Detroit Titans (9-4-1, 2-1 Horizon League) posted a 2-0 victory over the Green Bay Phoenix (3-8-2, 1-2 Horizon League) Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.

Detroit women's soccer, the No. 9 ranked team in the Great Lakes Region, was given a penalty kick after sophomore Abby McCollum went down in the box. The referee immediately made the call and Dornbos converted on her fourth penalty kick of the year and fifth of her career. The defender now has six career goals, five on penalty kicks.

The nine wins on the season is the highest total for Detroit since 2006 when the Titans finished 10-11 overall.

It was the second straight year the Detroit-Green Bay contest saw a penalty kick as a factor in the game. The Titans were up 1-0 last year in Green Bay and the Phoenix tied it up on a penalty kick in the 78th minute. The final result was a 1-1 draw.

“In the first half we had the wind and when you have the wind in these conditions you have to punish them and we were fortunate enough to get a penalty shot,” said women's soccer head coach Mike Lupenec.

The Titans added another tally in the second half as sophomore Kaitlyn Quarrell registered her fourth goal of the season and 10th of her career. In the 57th minute, her shot from just inside the left side of the 18-yard box carried up and into the upper right corner of the net. Quarrell also scored the lone Detroit goal against Green Bay in last year's match-up.

Sophomore goalkeeper Nora Abolins made two saves in net recording her fourth shutout of the year. The blanking gives her 11 in her career and moves her into sole possession of fourth place all-time in Detroit women's soccer history while the win was her 15th overall and moves her to fifth all-time.

“We didn't really allow them to have a quality chance all game. Hats off to our defense and especially Nora because she had a couple situations on crosses and set pieces but she was very steady throughout the game,” added Lupenec.

The defensive backline of Alyssa Korson and Alexandra Suschak, Dornbos, Alyssa Lotito and Janae Paveglio was a key factor in keeping the Phoenix to just two shots on game with no attempts from closer than 20 yards away.

Detroit is a perfect 5-0 at home in 2011, including 2-0 in Horizon League matches, and has outscored opponents 17-2 at Titan Field.

“You have to win your conference games at home and this was a huge game. Not only do we get three points but we climb the ladder in regards to trying to win the league. Today you get excited about your win and on Monday you get back to work and get ready for what Youngstown State has on Wednesday,” said Lupenec.

Detroit will make the trip to Youngstown, OH this week in preparation for Wednesday's game at 4:00 p.m. The game will be shown live on the Horizon League Network.
