NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac scored an early goal and then defended well the rest of the way to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Yale on a gorgeous night at Reese Stadium.

“I thought we carried the play in the second half,” said Yale head coach Brian Tompkins. “We’re just not doing a good enough job executing on our goal scoring chances.”

The only goal came off a corner kick at 5:44. James Doig sent a ball into the box. Erik Panzer headed it to Simon Hinde, who fired a hard shot just inside the post from 12 yards out.

Hinde has now scored five of Quinnipiac’s seven goals on the season.

The Bulldogs (1-6) had the edge in possession, especially in the second half, but managed just nine shots in the game.

Yale was applying pressure late and had a corner kick in the final minute but couldn’t capitalize.

Goalkeeper Blake Brown made two saves for the Bulldogs. One was a diving stop after Justin Ward split the defense and broke in alone midway through the second half.

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the start of the Ivy League season. Yale hosts Harvard in the league opener next Saturday at 7 p.m. at Reese.

“I still very much believe in this team,” Tompkins said. “We have a lot of character. We had a great week of practice. Our focus is on having a good Ivy League season.”
