University of Wyoming senior Kasey Curtis’ goal three minutes into Sunday’s contest against Montana proved to be the game winner as the Cowgirls blanked the Grizzlies 1-0 at the Louis S. Madrid Sport Complex. It was Curtis’ first goal of the season and sixth of her career.

“I’m happy that we created so many chances in the front and got one to fall for the win,” head Coach Pete Cuadrado said. “I’m also very proud of being so solid in the back defensively, not to mention the great crowd we got to the game. It’s always great to have our fans behind us.”

Senior Alex Boehm turned away three shots from the Griz for her first shutout of the season and the fifth shutout of her career.

Wyoming freshman Alisha Bass came out ready to go with the first shot on goal that at the 1-minute mark but it was blocked. Montana answered with a shot by senior Tyler Adair on goal but Boehm came away with the save. Curtis answered with the first and only goal of the game in the first 3 minutes off a cross from sophomore Sammi Dunda. The Griz followed with another attempt at the goal by Adair and Boehm secured her second save of the game.

 The first half ended with the shot count even across the board with six attempts from both teams. UW led 1-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Cowgirls came out with aggressive defensive pressure, making sure the shots were limited on the goal. Sophomore Shelby Shorb came out with a shot that hit the crossbar and freshman teammate Kayla Cryer followed it with a missed header. Bass later appeared to have scored a goal, but officials ruled she was offside. 

The Cowgirls outshot Montana by a final 17-11 margin. Curtis led Wyoming with one goal and Cryer followed with five shots on goal.

Up next for the Cowgirls is a weekend slate, with games on the road against Idaho State at 4 p.m. MT Friday and Weber State at 1 p.m. MT Sunday. The Cowgirls will return to the Louis S. Madrid Sport Complex on Sept. 26 against Nevada at 3 p.m. MT. A special promotion will take place, Family Friday, which includes four tickets, four hot dogs and four Pepsi’s for $20.
