Boca Raton, FL - The Florida Atlantic University women’s soccer team found itself on the losing end of its second double overtime match of the season, dropping a 2-1 decision to UNLV on Sunday afternoon in the Lady Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

The Owls are now 1-4 on the season, while UNLV improved to 3-2-1.

“The girls gave great effort today while playing in over 100-degree temperatures,” said Brian Dooley, FAU’s head women’s soccer coach.  “I am proud of the players’ effort (three members played the entire match).  I believe good things are going to come for this team in the future.”

UNLV’s Susie Bernal scored the game-winning goal just over one minute into the second 10-minute overtime period.

FAU got on the scoreboard early in the match as freshman forward Taylor Sorrels scored her first career goal in the fourth minute.  Sorrels beat UNLV goalkeeper Kylie Wassell with a blast from 25 yards out.

The host Rebels answered in the 36th minute when Caitlin Allen headed a shot after a long free kick from Macy Jo Harrison.

Florida Atlantic had more scoring opportunities than UNLV, having a 7-6 advantage of shots on goal.  Senior goalkeeper Ashley Lantes made four saves in net for the Owls.

Offensively, junior midfielder Marisa Russo and freshman midfielder Claire Emslie led a balanced FAU effort with two shots.  Freshmen Alessandra Morales, Gabriella Sosa, Haleigh Stremanos and Sorrels joined sophomore Olivia MBala and junior Brittney Nash with each having one shot.

The match was the team’s second overtime contest of the young fall season, losing a double-overtime match in its season opener against Jacksonville University on August 17.

FAU will wrap up its five-match road swing with a contest against in-state foe Stetson University on Saturday, September 8, at 2 p.m. in DeLand, Fla.
