FDU Stuns Saints in Double Overtime

October 5, 2013

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Anders Vest-Hansen blasted home a penalty kick with 1:34 remaining in double overtime as 2012 NCAA College Cup Sweet 16 participant Fairleigh Dickinson rallied from two goals down to stun Siena Soccer 3-2.

Fairleigh Dickinson’s (7-3) Nico Wright made a 1v1 run down the left side, but got tangled up with a Siena (4-4) defender leading to the penalty kick. Vest-Hansen took the ensuing penalty kick, blasting a shot inside the left post to win it for the Knights.

Siena jumped on FDU early, scoring twice in the final four minutes of the first half to take a commanding 2-0 lead at the break. Nathan Olukanmi sent a cross in from the right that Tom Allen got a toe on for his first goal of the season.

With 53 seconds remaining in the first half, Knights’ keeper Jacob Lissek misplayed a goal kick to his defender. Senior captain Mike Matera raced in, intercepted the errant pass and finished uncontested for his first collegiate goal.

But the Saints could not keep the momentum going in the second half. Fairleigh Dickinson out-shot Siena 17-5 from the second half on and caught a few breaks to rally back.

In the 65th minute an FDU entry into the box was pinballed around and eventually deflected off the Knights’ Simon Doherty to halve the deficit. Just over eight minute later, the Knights scored the equalizer as a pass in front deflected off a Siena defender for an own goal.

Fairleigh Dickinson out-shot the Saints 26-12 for the match, although Siena held a 6-5 edge in shots on target. Adam Myers made two saves for the Saints, while Lissek stopped four shots for the Knights.

The Saints open MAAC competition Wednesday when they face defending conference champion Niagara at 3 p.m. at Siena Turf Field.
