Five Goal First Half Leads Titans To Victory Over IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS -- Detroit held a 12-4 overall shooting advantage and 7-0 shot on goal advantage in the opening half as the Titans (2-1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the break at IUPUI (0-3-1) Friday evening en route to a 5-1 victory.

The Titans held a 5-0 lead after the first half after senior Alyssa Korson (Suttons Bay, MI/Lake Leelanau St. Mary's) started the Detroit scoring with a goal 9:53 into the match. Korson found a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and her shot carried over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Junior Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) had the next Titan goal off a corner kick from fellow junior Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland). Sophomore Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) added two first half tallies on five shots and junior Nina Carter (Clinton Twp. MI/Chippewa Valley) had a goal and an assist.

Quarrell's first goal was a nice pass from Carter who slid it to Quarrell behind the defense and Quarrell broke in and had her initial shot stopped but made no mistake her second attempt. Carter's goal made it 4-0 as she stole the ball from IUPUI defender and went had a clear path to the goalkeeper and tallied her first of the year.

“We know we're scoring goals and getting positive results. Overall our fitness is good, but we still need to get better defensively and at keeping possession of the ball. We are playing a stretch of four games in ten days and that's not an easy thing to do,” said head coach Mike Lupenec.

Freshman Miranda Dufresne (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedicts) registered her first collegiate point with an assist on Quarrell's second goal of the half. Dufresne had the ball just over the midfield line and found Quarrell breaking in on net who then beat the goalkeeper.

“It was nice to see after a long bus ride that we were able to come out with enough energy to put a team away in the first half and then utilize our depth throughout the game,” said Titan assistant coach Jamie Huff.

The second half saw IUPUI score one but the Titan backline held its own for the third straight game as the defense have held opponents to just two goals in three games.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Oberheim (Springfield, VA/Lee) recorded three saves in first career start earning her first win.

Detroit will head to Bowling Green on Sunday to play a match set for 1:00 p.m.
