EDISON, NJ – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced its 2018 men's soccer postseason awards on Tuesday morning. The Iona College men's soccer program has four award winners, highlighted by freshman Mauro Bravo being named the MAAC Rookie of the Year and an All-MAAC Second Team honoree.
Junior Malcolm Moreno and senior Humbert Ferrer join Bravo on the All-MAAC Second Team. Senior forward Killian Colombie wraps his Maroon & Gold career being voted to the All-MAAC First Team. Bravo was also named the MAAC All-Rookie Team.
This is the second time in the last four seasons that Iona has had at least four student-athletes earn postseason accolades. In 2015 the Gaels had the similar spread with one All-MAAC First Team, two All-MAAC Second Team and one MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree.
Bravo is the sixth-ever MAAC Rookie of the Year and the first since Daniel Huertas was honored in 2015. He is just one of two freshmen on the All-MAAC Second Team. Skylar Conway of Marist is the only other rookie.
He finished the season ranking second on the Gaels with four goals and 11 points. He tied for the team-lead with three assists. Bravo had 19 shots and made the most of them with 12 being on goal. His .632 shot on goal percentage was second best for the Maroon & Gold for all student-athletes who had 10+ shots.
On Tuesday, Sept. 18, the Madrid, Spain native had a career day with a game-winning goal and an assist in a 3-1 win against Fairleigh Dickinson. He matched it on Saturday, Sept. 29 against Canisius with another score and helper.
Bravo was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Monday, Sept. 24.
Colombie caps off his Iona career with his first ever All-MAAC accolade. His appointment to the First Team makes it nine straight years with at least one Gael represented. The full list of Iona's All-MAC First Team honorees is can be seen below.
Colombie led the Maroon & Gold this season with seven goals, 17 points, 38 shots and 19 shots on goal. He tied for the team lead with three assists. He led all forwards with 1467 minutes played. In MAAC play, Colombie had four goals and two assists.
As of Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Paris, France native ranked tied for fifth in the MAAC in shots (48), sixth in shots per game (2.67), fourth in points (17), sixth in points per game (17), third in goals (7), and 10 in assists (3).
Colombie finishes his Iona career ranked tied for ninth all-time in shots attempted (119) and shots on goal (48). He finished his career with 15 goals, six assists and three game-winning goals.
Ferrer began his career being named the MAAC All-Rookie Team and he concludes it with an All-MAAC Second Team distinction. Iona's captain has been a staple for the Gaels on the backline having appeared in 64 career games with 61 career starts.
This season the Maroon & Gold allowed opponents to score just 1.22 goals per game. It is the seventh-best team average since 2002. Ferrer was also a part of 2015's 0.91 and 2017's 0.98 goals against average, which rank third and fifth best.
This season Ferrer scored his one goal in a 2-2 draw at home against Saint Peter's on Oct. 6. He had an assist in a 4-1 win versus Canisius on Sept. 29. Ferrer ranked second on the team with 1642 minutes played.
Moreno started in all 16 of his appearances and finished the 2018 campaign with one goal and three assists. He had one in Iona's first win of the season against Binghamton on Aug. 28. Then in league play he cranked it up with helpers at home against Saint Peter's (Oct. 6) and Siena (Oct. 20).
Moreno played in a career-best number of games this season and set new personal bests in assists and shot on goal percentage (.600).
Along with his fellow All-MAAC Second Team teammate, senior Rory Head and sophomores Joseph Cusano and Tomas Jammett, the Gael defensive backline held Iona opponents this season to .428 shot on goal percentage and .106 shots percentage.
