GCU Stuns Seattle U On Late Monterroso Goal

October 11, 2014

A Maria Monterroso goal with 2:14 remaining propelled the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team (2-8-1, 1-2-0) to a 1-0 win over preseason Western Athletic Conference (WAC) favorite Seattle U (7-4-2, 3-1-0) Friday night at Championship Field in Seattle, Wash.

With neither team able to generate any offense in the first 87 minutes of action, Monterroso struck in the 88th minute with her sixth goal of the season to secure the 1-0 victory for the Antelopes, snapping Seattle U's 15-game regular season WAC winning streak.

"It was a great win for us against an excellent Seattle side," said head coach Stevie Gill. "I was very proud of the girls tonight. I thought that we were very organized defensively throughout the competition and our goalkeeper Blakely was outstanding."

The score remained 0-0 heading into intermission, as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first 45 minutes of action. Both the Lopes and Redhawks managed to record four shots in the first half.

Cassie Beckwith and Monterroso each put one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes of action to lead the offensive attack. Freshman keeper Blakely Fraasch was stellar in the first half, notching four saves to prevent Seattle U from getting on the board.

Much like the first half, half number two was tightly-contested, with neither team able to capitalize on a scoring chance until Monterroso buried a shot with just over two minutes remaining to secure the win for Grand Canyon.

Fraasch finished with six saves, completing her first-career shutout in goal.

Monterroso and Beckwith finished with two shots on target each, while Joanna Lagunas and Milla Benedetti contributed to the offensive effort with one shot on goal apiece. Monterroso's six goals ranks fourth in the conference.

"We will enjoy the win this evening and look forward to playing in Utah on Sunday," added Gill.

The Lopes will now travel to Orem, Utah for Sunday's showdown with Utah Valley. Kickoff at Clyde Field is slated for 1 p.m. (Arizona Time) and fans can find live links to follow the action at www.gculopes.com.
