GW Holds On for 1-0 Win Over NJIT

Published: September 24, 2017

WASHINGTON, DC—George Washington Brady O'Connor's penalty kick in the 52nd minute was the lone goal of the game as the Colonials held off visiting NJIT, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.

George Washington moves to 3-4-1 overall while the Highlanders stand at 6-2-2 on the season.

The game remained scoreless into the second half until O'Connor was fouled in the box. O'Connor's penalty strike was a low drive that went past the diving Highlander keeper, for the lone goal of the game.

We were not good enough on the day," second-year head coach Fernando Barboto commented.  "We dominated in possession and in every single statistical category except one, goals.  We missed five breakaways and that's not good enough.  We have to get back to work on Monday and sharped up our finishing."

In the 85th minute, the nation's leading scorer, Mamadou Guirassy snuck behind the George Washington defense, but Thor Arne Hofs managed to punch away his shot.

The Highlanders pressuring till the final whistle, had a late opportunity in the 89th minute on a shot by sophomore Andrew Nino, which was grabbed by Hofs.

Victor Pujades stopped three Colonial shots for the Highlanders while Hof combined for seven saves.

NJIT led two statistical categories -- total shots (11-7) and corner kicks (5-3).  Guirassy and Paulino Marqueseach recorded three shots apiece for the visitors.

The Highlanders, which will play the next four matches on the road, will return to action on September 30 at ASUN Conference opponent Lipscomb.  Kickoff is slated for 7pm.
