Hartwick Wins in Extra Time Again

September 13, 2015
SPOKANE, WA – Hartwick got a fortuitous bounce in the late stages of the second overtime period and Jamie O’Grady (Falkirk, Scotland/Falkirk) was there to clean up as Hartwick defeated Houston Baptist by a final score of 3-2 on Sunday to cap a massive two-win weekend in Spokane, WA. Hartwick improves to 3-1-2 and is unbeaten in its last five matches. Today marked the Hawks’ fourth consecutive double overtime game. With the clock ticking down in the second extra session, Marc Berry (Galashiels, Scotland/Galashiels Academy) delivered a deep cross from the right side. It took a slight deflection and a backtracking Houston Baptist goalkeeper Chance Pope went up to put the ball over the crossbar. Instead, Pope touched it against the crossbar and it fell straight down to O’Grady who was a yard from goal. He tapped it home 11 seconds from full time sending the Hawks to their second straight victory. It was also O’Grady’s second straight double-overtime winner. O’Grady would give the Hawks the lead in the first half. At the 17:51 mark, Nick Hills (Garden Suburb, Australia/U. of Newcastle) darted into the box and was taken down by a Husky defender. O’Grady took the spot kick burying his shot low to Phillip Poser’s right for the lead. Hartwick held onto the lead through the first half, but Houston Baptist evened the score ten minutes into the second. Thilo Borgmann ran down a long pass on the left side of the Hawks’ goal. He shook off a tackle and at the corner of the box and put a ball past keeper Lenny Wilson (Aberdeen, Scotland/Cults Academy), who had come out on the play, for the tying goal. The Hawks answered right back two minutes, forty-one second later. Berry played a ball from the left flank over the top of the Husky defense. Wyatt Scott (Cicero, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) got to the ball first in the box and touched it past Pope for the go-ahead goal in the 58th minute. The lead lasted exactly nine minutes before HBU evened the contest once again. A bouncing ball just inside the Hartwick box produced a shot from Dominick Faletto which a charging Wilkins stopped. But the ball popped right to Darrell Johnson who scored off the crossbar and into an empty ’Wick goal. Neither team produced a shot in the first overtime. In the second, HBU created a few scoring chances but both were put off target. One was ripped wide, hitting the side netting five minutes in. The second from inside the box was put high over the bar roughly a minute before O’Grady’s winner. Houston Baptist finished with advantages in shots (19-12) and corners (6-3). Wilkins made nine saves in the match for the Hawks. Poser (1) and Pope (4) combined to make five stops for the Huskies. Hartwick returns to action on Friday, September 18 when the Hawks travel to UMass-Lowell for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
