Murphy scores twice in Monmouth victory

FAIRFIELD, CONN.
- Highlighted by a pair of goals from sophomore forward Erica Murphy (Millstone Township, N.J./Pennington Prep), the Monmouth University women's soccer team posted a 4-0 road victory at league-leading Fairfield University on Saturday night in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Lessing Field.

Monmouth, which earned its 10th victory of the season to push its streak of consecutive double-digit win seasons to nine straight, improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the MAAC, while handing Fairfield its first conference loss of the year (4-1) and its first home loss since August 31, 2012 (an unbeaten streak of 18 matches).

"Tonight was a terrific result on the road for our team," said head coach Krissy Turner. "We executed the game plan and finished our chances."

The Hawks broke the scoreless match in the 30th minute when sophomore forward Alexis McTamney (Bordentown, N.J./Bordentown Regional) registered a goal for the Blue & White, the forward's 16th career score. Monmouth doubled its advantage to 2-0 just 2:46 later as junior Brianne Boyle (Hazlet, N.J./Hazlet) notched her third goal of the year, all of which have come in MAAC play.

Murphy put MU in front 3-0 when she collected a pass from McTamney for the tally in the 38th minute.

Murphy, who now has five goals in the Hawks' last four matches, pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 66th minute when the sophomore nodded in senior Alexa Freguletti's (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) free kick service in to the box.

Monmouth, which is now 5-1-2 in its eight MAAC road games in the last two seasons, is now 3-0 versus Fairfield since joining the MAAC and has outscored the Stags 8-0.

The Hawks, who registered their seventh shutout of the season, outshot the Stags 16-14 overall, as graduate student goalkeeper Nicole D'Agostino (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central/Pitt) made four saves in net for her fifth clean sheet of the year.

Monmouth, unbeaten in its last four matches, returns to action on Saturday night, October 18 when the Hawks host Quinnipiac University at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn at 7:00 p.m., on Senior Night.
