Hilltoppers cannot come back against Rattlers, 3-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The St. Edward’s men’s soccer had a tough loss to long-time rival St. Mary’s, 3-1, Friday afternoon in San Antonio.

 

St. Edward’s (3-3, 1-1 HC) got off to a tough start when the Rattlers midfielder, Adam Muro, scored in the first minute of the match off of an assist from Mark Mendoza.

 

In the 30th minute St. Mary’s defender, Michael Hasbach, would score off a deflection.

 

Before the end of the half, the Hilltoppers would have some great runs and attacks on goal but were unable to find the back of the net, leaving the team down, 2-0 at the half.

 

In the second half, St. Edward’s started to turn on the offensive pressure maintaining control of the ball and attacking the goal.

 

In the 51st minute JR Ellis (Junior, Coppell, Texas) would put the Hilltoppers on the board scoring a nice header off a corner kick from James Martin (Junior, Haywards Heath, England), assisted by Keston Smith (Junior, Lisas Garden Couva, Trinidad). Making the score, 2-1.  

 

As the Hilltoppers fought to tie up the match, the Rattlers’ Anthony Bustos would cross the ball through the Hilltopper defense to Eduardo Serrano for a goal in the 79th minute.

 

The game would end, 3-1, in favor of the Rattlers. The Hilltoppers outshot the Rattlers 11-9.

 

The Hilltoppers will be back in action Sunday when they travel to take on Texas A&M-International.  Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. in Laredo.
