The opening day of the men’s soccer season delivered plenty of jaw-dropping goals, statistics, and results. Read a recap of everything you need to know.

First Goal

The honor for the first goal of the season goes to Lewis Rourke of Old Dominion, who executed a towering header set up by a pinpoint Barrett Saul cross. The senior forward would go on to score another in a 3-1 victory over George Washington.

New Year

A new year means new contenders, and no better way to emphasize that message than with No. 12 San Diego going on the road to defeat defending national champion and No. 1-ranked Washington. Taj Eagleston and Devin Dillon each scored once, assuring a late goal from Zach Ramsey proved futile.

Bluebloods

The only other matchup between top 25 teams was No. 25 North Carolina traveling to No. 5 Georgetown. The Tar Heels took a first-half lead through Joschi Schelb, but Georgetown would eventually equalize on a Mitchell Baker goal set up by a brilliant Mateo Ponce Ocampo flick.

Message Sent

Undoubtedly the most shocking result of the night was unranked Clemson handing No. 2 Furman a 5-1 beatdown. The College Cup semi-finalists were unable to stop a free-flowing Tigers attack that could have scored more on another day. Two goals from Xander Sevian, along with lone strikes from Ransford Gyan, Mason Jimenez, and Johannes Kaeck gave the four-time national champions a 5-0 lead before Diego Hernandez found a late consolation. Gyan’s strike, a moment of brilliance, deserves another look.

Upset City

The other two upsets from opening night belong to UCLA and Syracuse. The California side defeated No. 16-ranked Virginia 2-1 thanks to a Logan Hall goal with nine minutes remaining. ACC side Syracuse achieved a similar 2-1 victory over No. 18 Connecticut as 6-foot-6 sophomore striker Jordan Grey scored one and assisted Gabriel Oksanen to lead the charge.

Epic Teamwork

It took just a few hours of the 2026 campaign for St. John's to give us a bona fide Goal of the Season contender. Check out this marvelous team sequence resulting in an Andrew Porucznik goal.

Herd That

Speaking of moments that will be remembered all season, Adam N'Goran of Marshall scored a match-winner with just six seconds remaining in a tense matchup versus Fairfield.

Home Cooking

Jordan Igwenma, a highly rated freshman recruit, delivered on opening night for his hometown program, scoring twice as Creighton defeated Florida International 6-2. Even more impressive is that it came in just 33 minutes of action.

Brace for Impact

In the spirit of Igwenma, five other freshmen scored two goals on opening night.

  • Said El Eyssami, Maryland 2-1 Pittsburgh
  • Michael Raggett, Charlotte 3-0 West Virginia

Thriller Night

It only took one night for Longwood and William & Mary to gift the country with what may be the most entertaining match all season as the former pulled off a thrilling 6-5 victory.
