Georgia Sets New NCAA Attendance Record
There is a new record for the largest audience at an NCAA soccer match as 25,433 watched Georgia host James Madison at Sanford Stadium, breaking the record set back in 1980. The Bulldogs took full advantage of the historic occasion, securing a commanding 6-0 victory.
Honoka Hamano scored twice to lead all scorers, joined by Mya Townes, Ava Stack, Mona Childs, and Leila Avila. Despite the result, both coaching staffs took steps to ensure the bulk of their rosters got to partake in the match of a lifetime. The Bulldogs utilized 27 players, including all three goalkeepers, while the Dukes did the same with their shotstoppers and featured 20 athletes.
The previous NCAA women’s soccer record was 14,410, set back in the 1999 NCAA tournament final between North Carolina and Notre Dame. The overall record was 22,512 in 1980 as Saint Louis took on SIUE in their legendary men’s college soccer rivalry.
