Hoftra men beaten by Ohio State
September 13, 2009
State College, PA (Sept. 13) - Junior forward Johannes Grahn (Tibro, Sweden) scored a pair of goals but the Hofstra Men's Soccer team, playing down a man for just under 65 minutes, fell 4-2 to Ohio State on Sunday afternoon on the second day of the Penn State Classic.
With the loss, the Pride falls to 1-3 on the year, while Ohio State improves to 2-0-2.
Hofstra fell behind on a goal in the fifth minute from Ohio State's Austin McKenna, but Grahn knotted the score in the 28th minute when he headed in a cross form senior midfielder Rob Youhill (Harrogate, England), who picked up his 17th career assist on the play, moving him alone into fourth on the Pride's all-time list.
Just over one minute later, though, freshman defender A.J. Laza (Coram, NY) was given a red card for a foul just outside the Hofstra penalty area. Doug Verhoff took the ensuing free kick and buried a shot to put the Buckeyes back ahead 2-1.
Verhoff added another goal in the 43rd minute to stretch the lead to 3-1 just before the half. Hofstra was awarded a penalty kick in the 58th minute, and Grahn slotted the shot home for his second goal of the game and third of the season to pull Hofstra within 3-2. Andrew Magill, though, was able to answer for the Buckeyes in the 64th minute to give the Buckeyes the insurance goal back, and the Pride was unable to mount another rally.
Ohio State finished with a 19-10 edge in shots. James Winters (Austin, TX) had six first half saves for Hofstra, while Greg Cumpstone (Haddam, CT) had one in relief in the second half. Ohio State's Matt Lampson had one save to get the win.
Hofstra will next be in action when it travels to play in the Stetson University Tournament this weekend, facing Jacksonville on Friday at 5 p.m. and host Stetson on Sunday at 1 p.m.
