HIGH POINT, N.C. - The High Point University men's soccer team fell in double overtime to No. 19 Coastal Carolina by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night in Vert Stadium. Sophomore Erien Campbell scored HPU's goal to force extra time.

"I am really pleased with the team's performance because every player on the field was fully invested in the game," head coach Dustin Fonder said. "This is the first time we have gotten a total investment like that and if we can keep doing that our season will turn in a good direction very soon."

The contest remained scoreless until the 52nd minute when Coastal broke the stalemate with a goal by Sergio Camargo to put the Chanticleers ahead, 1-0. Camargo played a 1-2 with Jakub Stourac, setting him free on the right side of the box and making a run to the far post. Stourac delivered the cross back to Camargo who finished just in front of goal.

Coastal nearly doubled its lead in the 67th minute but was denied by a fantastic save from HPU keeper Ryan Massey. The Chanticleers earned a corner kick and Kai Morton hit a header on frame. Massey got a hand on the ball and hit it off the cross bar then out of the box.

Campbell tied the game for High Point in the 75th minute, scoring off a cross from freshman Matt Gweh. Nyepon set Gweh free on the left side with a flicked header down the line. The freshman dribbled into the box and hit a hard cross to the far post to Campbell who finished in close to knot the score at 1-1.

Massey came up big for the Panthers again in the 82nd minute with a point-blank save on a shot by Camargo to maintain the 1-1 tie.

Coastal clinched the game in the 104th minute with a free kick by Pedro Ribeiro from 35-yards out. Ribeiro hit a line drive into the top left corner to secure the 2-1 win for CCU.

Coastal Carolina held the majority of the possession and finished with a 23-14 advantage in shots and a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.  Massey matched his career high with eight saves in the game for HPU to help the Panthers reach extra time. CCU keeper Devin Cook made four saves to earn the win for the Chanticleers.

The loss drops High Point to 3-6-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Big South. Coastal Carolina moves to 7-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference.

HPU returns to action next Saturday when the team travels to Asheville, N.C., to face the Bulldogs of UNC Asheville. The game will kick off at 1 p.m.
