Iona Stumbles at La Salle; Fall 2-0
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Iona College women’s soccer team faced a tough La Salle squad, but fell to the Explorers, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium in non-conference action.
La Salle (2-0) scored in the 17th minute of play as Courtney Niemeic sent a pass from the top of the right side box and found Kelsey Haycook for the tally just behind junior netminder Trista Rivera. The Explorers added an insurance goal late in the 87th minute off a restart by Renee Washington.
Rivera made 12 saves as the Gaels struggled on the offensive side of the pitch and were outshot 22-4. Individual Iona shots on goal came from junior Katie Higgins, and sophomores Sofia Sanchez and Melissa Frederick.
Iona (0-2-1) will return to Mazzella Field on Friday afternoon for a non-conference tilt with Rhode Island at 4 pm.
