Iona Stuns Saints in Overtime
Sofia Sanchez scored the golden goal in the 95th minute of overtime as Iona shutout Siena Women’s Soccer 1-0 in New Rochelle, N.Y. Taylor Booth made two saves in a losing effort for the Saints.
Siena (8-7-1, 4-3-1), which entered the day in fourth place in the MAAC just ahead of fifth place Iona (5-7-4, 4-2-2), controlled the tempo. The Saints outshot the Gaels 13-6 and attempted all four of the matches’ corners.
But Erika Flowers found Sanchez from 15 yards out in overtime as the Gaels leapfrogged back over Siena in the MAAC Standings with one week of regular season action remaining.
Booth, who entered the match riding a program record four consecutive shutouts, was strong once again. Her program record shutout streak ends at more than eight hours of action at 480:06.
Taylor D’Alfonso and Brittany Pfaff each registered three targets for Siena.
Trista Rivera (three saves) and Jacquelyn Gates (five saves) split time in goal for Iona, combining for eight saves to post the shutout.
The Saints host Fairfield in their final home match of the year Wednesday at 3 p.m.
