Jacks drop home opener to Drake...

SDSU surrendered a late goal and was unable to recover in its 2-1 home opener loss to Drake on Friday…

SDSU evened the game early in the second half, but surrendered a goal in the 75th minute and was unable to find the equalizer.

In the first half, the Bulldogs scored on a double assist to take the lead in the eighth minute. The second assist beat the goalkeeper and the Drake forward played the ball into an open net.

The remainder of the first half was scoreless.

SDSU and Drake tied in shots (5-5) and shots on goal (3-3), but the Jackrabbits attempted four corner kicks while the Bulldogs did not attempt a corner. Both teams were whistled for three fouls and neither team was called for offside.

Diana Potterveld led the Jack attack in the first half with three shots, two on goal. Megan Kingston also recorded one shot, one on goal.

Elisa Stamatakis made two saves in the first half.

SDSU attacked early and often to start the second half, and the pressure paid off.

Darci Miller controlled the ball after a scramble in the box and put it in the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Megan Kingston played the corner kick to start the play.

The Jacks continued to attack, but failed to find another goal.

Over 20 minutes later, Drake took advantage of a counter attack. The Bulldogs scored as the forward dribbled the ball into the box and played it low and to the far post for a 2-1 lead.

SDSU led in shots (14-9), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (7-4), but Drake made the most of its opportunities. Drake was whistled for four fouls and one offside. SDSU was whistled for seven fouls and no offside.

The Jacks fall to 1-3-1 on the season.

Drake improves to 3-2-0.

SDSU is back in action next Friday at North Dakota. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Grand Forks, N.D.
