JMU Loses 2-1 at Penn
PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 31, 2012 -- James Madison (2-2-0) led 1-0 midway through the first half but Penn (1-0-0) rallied for a 2-1 win in women's soccer Friday night at Rhodes Field.
Two Dukes' players from the Philadelphia area teamed up to score for JMU 29:57 into the first half. Sophomore Shannon Rano (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) scored on a header off a corner kick from freshman Kelly Kerrigan (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) to put the Dukes up 1-0.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Penn scored just 27 seconds later to tie the game. Laura Oliver tallied the Quakers' goal off a cross from Kathryn Barth.
Penn then scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second half, as Kerry Scalora converted a corner kick in the 65th minute.
Each team took nine shots, and Penn goalie Sarah Banks made five saves. JMU redshirt freshman goalkeeper Ellen Forest (Midlothian, Va./James River) finished with two saves.
The game was the first of four straight road contests for the Dukes, whose next game is vs. Richmond on Friday, Sept. 7, in a tournament at the University of Virginia.
