Lady Bisons tie as Lundy sets records agains

October 16, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb freshman forward Ellen Lundy set two school records Friday night as the Lady Bisons soccer team tied Central Arkansas 2-2 at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.

Lundy, who is averaging a goal a game, scored her seventh goal of the season in the fifth minute of play. The goal also pushed her to 15 points on the season, also a school record.

Lundy received the lob pass from Brooke Coakley from midfield and was able to break free from the defense and chip the shot over Kaitlyn Keith for the 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, the Bears (2-2-2) answered starting with a corner kick. Brooke Ballard took the kick that bounced around in front of the net. Allie Coleman was able to get a foot on the ball, making the short pass to Adriana Lucar who finished the goal.

“It was a game where we started out real strong,” Lipscomb head coach Kevin O’Brien said. “We got the early goal by Ellen. Unfortunately, we were sleeping on another set piece and that has been an issue on a few occasions this season. We allowed Central Arkansas right back into the game.”

The Bears challenged the rest of the first half and the opening of the second half, finally wearing the LU defense down to take a 2-1 lead in the 59thminute.

Shelby Wilson fired a shot from outside the penalty box that was blocked by Lipscomb goalkeeper Anna Buhigas. The shot rebounded to the feet of Brooke Ballard who struck the ball into the net.

The Lady Bisons (2-3-2) had an answer of their own at 73:41 mark. Freshman midfield Alesondra Colbert passed a ball through the Bears defense as junior forward Baylee Linnell used her speed to break away from the pack and beat the keeper to the net.

“It was a slow middle period of the game, that 30-to-60-minute mark,” O’Brien said. “But I think the way we finished was excellent.”

With the score tied at 2-2 the Lady Bisons had several chances to knock in the go-ahead goal, but couldn’t find the back of the net.

“I’m very proud of the effort the girls put in,” O’Brien said. “They really worked incredibly hard and we had some glorious chances to win the game and unfortunately we were just a bit shy.”

Lundy’s seven goals have come on just eight shots on frame. She surpassed Meghan McGuire for the goals record set in 2011. Her seven goals and one assist give her 15 points which surpassed Kate Spellman for the single-season record previously set in 2008.

“We are just proud of Ellen,” O’Brien said. She has had a great season so far. The first day of preseason you could tell she was all about it. She has a great work ethic and it pays dividends in the box. Her conversion rate is excellent.

“I am just really proud of her and the team. Obviously she doesn’t get goals if we don’t have people supplying her the ball.”

Lipscomb plays its final home game of a five-game stretch Monday hosting Belmont. This will be the first “Battle of the Boulevard” for O’Brien and first meeting since the 2011 season. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
