EASTON, Pa. – A goal for each team 23 seconds apart told the story as Lafayette and Quinnipiac played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium. The program celebrated its 100^th Anniversary Season with a pregame ceremony and welcomed its alumni to the field at halftime.

A half hour into the match, Lafayette began to sustain a good bit of pressure when Ryan Egan’s cross was knocked out for a corner kick off a deflection by goalkeeper Borja Angoitia. The ensuing corner by Alec Golini resulted in a tremendous scoring chance for Julian Plummer from just outside the six-yard box. Plummer hit a bouncing ball directly off the crossbar behind Angoitia and it ricocheted out to Jeff McLaughlin for a header that sailed over the goal.

In the first five minutes after intermission Quinnipiac had an opportunity to break the deadlock on a corner of its own. Stevenson Hawkey sent the cross into the area where Erik Panzer put his head to it, but the attempt didn’t have much power and Lafayette keeper Nathan McDonald was there for the easy save.

A misplay by the Leopards’ defense led to Quinnipiac’s Machel Baker finding the ball on his foot inside the penalty area in the 75^th minute. Baker wasted no time and fired a shot with the outside part of his right foot that struck the crossbar, keeping the game scoreless to that point.

A flurry of shots in succession by Lafayette yielded the game’s first goal in the 86^th minute. Peter Adubato put the first shot on that was knocked away by Angoitia before the ball was sent out and run onto by Golini. The senior ripped a one-timer on frame that was saved, but the rebound came out and was blasted into the top of the goal by Jeff McLaughlin. Lafayette took the 1-0 lead on McLaughlin’s first marker of the season.

Twenty-three seconds later, Quinnipiac found the equalizer. After the kickoff the Bobcats rushed down the right side and Baker sent a service toward the far post for Simon Hinde. The striker directed his shot back across the goal mouth and Leopards’ defender Brandon Turner tried to clear the ball away, but he was too deep and redirected the ball into the side netting.

That was all the scoring the afternoon had to offer as Angoitia finished with four saves and McDonald made three for the Leopards. Each side took seven shots on goal and the Bobcats held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

Lafayette begins a two-game trip against Ivy League opponents on Sept. 13 when it plays Dartmouth at 5 p.m. Two days later the Leopards will take on Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. at 3 p.m.
